Bryson William Verdun Hayes, or Verdun, broke the record earlier today after completing a tandem skydive with three generations of his family.Verdun shouted ‘hooray’ and said he was ‘absolutely over the moon’ when he touched down at at an airfield in Honiton, Devon.
The D-Day hero, who is 101 and 38 days, beat the former record set by Canadian Armand Gendreau by 35 days. The widower, from Croyde, Devon, took to the skies with ten members of his family at Skydive Buzz, in Dunkeswell. The youngest skydiver was Stanley, 16, Mr Hayes’ great-grandson, while his grandson Roger, 50, son Bryan, 74 and great-granddaughter Ellie, 21, were also among those who took the leap.
Speaking prior to record atempt, his daughter, Lin Tattersall, said: ‘He’s made up his own mind that he wants to do it again, and I am extremely proud of the reasoning behind it.’
Verdun served in the Army during World War Two and was presented with a Legion d’honneur for his heroic actions in Holland, Belgium, Germany and Normandy, France. Verdun, who hoped to raise £1,000, has already broke that number with £1,600. He and his family are raising money for the Royal British Legion.
